2012 Cox Plate

The 2012 Cox Plate will be the 90th anniversary of the legendary race that has produced multiple champions since its inception in 1922. The Group 1 W.S. Cox Plate is held at Moonee Valley Racecourse each year and is worth $3 million in prize money. Run by the Moonee Valley Racing Club, the race is named after the club’s original founder, William Samuel Cox. Run under weight-for-age conditions, the Cox Plate is the richest race of its nature in the world. Considered by many to be the best test of a horse’s true ability, the Cox Plate is one of the most lucrative, honourable and sought-after titles in Australia. The Cox Plate is run over the classic distance of 2,400 metres and is open to horses aged three-years-old and over.

In 1999 the Cox Plate became part of the Emirates World Series Racing Championship, which is a global grand prix of horse racing. Other races included in this championship include the Dubai World Cup, Irish Champion Stakes and the Breeders’ Cup Classic. A great number of celebrated horses have won the Cox Plate, including the great Phar Lap, Sunline and Kingston Town.
